Dr. Courtney Crappell, NCTM, is Assistant Professor of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) where he teaches piano, piano pedagogy, and class piano. In addition to his teaching activities, he coordinates the class piano program and maintains the music department’s Piano Pedagogy Resource Center. A native of South Louisiana, he earned his BM in Piano Performance at Louisiana State University and then traveled to the University of Oklahoma to complete his MM and DMA degrees in Piano Performance and Pedagogy. During his graduate studies, he was a winner of the OU concerto competition, and also a contributing recording artist for the CD accompanying the text, “The Music Effect Kindergarten,” by Dr. Joy Nelson.

Dr. Crappell’s research in piano literature, piano pedagogy, and ethnomusicology has been featured at international and national conferences and he is active as a clinician for state and local teachers inTexas. In 2008, he was invited to join the executive steering committee of the National Group Piano and Piano Pedagogy Forum. He has published articles and reviews in the Music Teachers’ National Association journal, “American Music Teacher,” and he is author of a regular column geared toward young professional music teachers for that journal. He has also published articles in the online journal, “Piano Pedagogy Forum.” His current research focuses on exploring non-Western pedagogical paradigms within the oral tradition.

An advocate for the seamless integration of technology in the teaching studio and classroom, Dr. Crappell has presented workshops for collegiate and independent music teachers introducing pedagogical techniques using digital keyboards, computer software, Internet utilities, and SMART Board technology. He is also co-creator and designer of the website www.findpianoworks.com. The site aims to systematically catalog piano teaching repertoire and anthologies in an effort to simplify the literature search process.

Dr. Crappell is an active member of the Music Teachers’ National Association and serves locally as the 1st Vice President of the San Antonio Music Teachers’ Association. Before joining the faculty at UTSA, he taught piano pedagogy and class piano atOklahoma CityUniversity. As a graduate teaching assistant at OU, he taught courses in class piano, secondary applied piano, aural skills, music theory, and world music. He has maintained a private studio and taught pre-collegiate beginner, intermediate, and advanced students since 1998.

FOR OHIO TEACHERS ON SEPTEMBER 9, 16, AND 17New National Program Created By Carnegie Hall and The Royal Conservatory
Encourages Musical Excellence Across The United States

(For Immediate Release – August 23, 2011)—Carnegie Hall and The Royal Conservatory invite Columbus-area music teachers to learn about The Carnegie Hall Royal Conservatory Achievement Program (The Achievement Program), a national system of music study and assessment for educators and people of all ages independently studying music throughout the United States. Free information sessions take place: Friday, September 9, at Church of The Redeemer, United Methodist in Columbus, and in Cincinnati on Friday, September 16 and Saturday, September 17 at the University of Cincinnati – College-Conservatory of Music and Church of the Saviour, respectively. Each session features an interactive information seminar highlighting benefits for local private music teachers and students. This is among dozens of Achievement Program sessions held across the United States since early June. Ohio teachers are also invited to an information session in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on September 9.Launched in March 2011 by New York’s Carnegie Hall and Canada’s Royal Conservatory, The Achievement Program provides a national standard for musical achievement, offering a sequential course of study from beginner through advanced levels for people of all ages studying music. Modeled on the acclaimed examination system of The Conservatory, which assesses 100,000 students annually in communities across Canada, the program was created in response to feedback from parents and teachers throughout the US, requesting a top-quality nationally-recognized system to track students’ musical progress, celebrating their accomplishments. The Program has been adopted by the state of Ohio as the official music teacher association state curriculum.

“The Achievement Program complements existing local and state music assessment programs, connecting students across the country through its national standard,” said Dr. Jennifer Snow, Chief Academic Officer, The Achievement Program. “This leading program provides a clear and meaningful path for recognizing musical achievement, empowering teachers to measure progress beyond regional borders and inspiring students to strive for excellence at a national level.”

Each interactive information session features an in-depth program overview and a demonstration assessment presented by leading pedagogues, including Dr. Snow. Hosting the Columbus event is local music teacher Jenni Kristoff, an Adjunct Professor at Capital University and a Center Representative of The Achievement Program. The September 16 Cincinnati session is led by Takako Hayase, a faculty member at the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music and an adjudicator for The Program. The September 17 session is led by Sheila Vail, former faculty member of the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music Preparatory Department, and Jo Ellen, a Center Representative of The Program. All attendees will receive a complimentary teacher support resource package that includes a syllabus (vocal or instrumental), theory syllabus, online theory module, online ear training module, and certificate of completion.

The program centers on periodic assessments for students—one-on-one adjudicator-to-student performance evaluations that also function as valuable teaching and learning opportunities. In each practical assessment, a certified professional adjudicator evaluates a student’s performance of repertoire, studies (etudes), and musical proficiency skills. Assessments are offered for keyboard, string, woodwind, and brass instruments; voice; and the academic subjects of music theory, music history, and pedagogy.

The Achievement Program differs from comparable assessment systems in its absence of membership fees, paperwork, or required volunteer hours for participating music teachers. The Program has been adopted by the states of Ohio, Massachusetts, and Wyoming as the official music teacher association state curriculum. Students of all ages can currently take assessments in 90 US locations, including several communities in Ohio, with the number of locations expected to grow as The Program develops. The Program will hold assessments several times a year with upcoming dates and registration information listed on TheAchievementProgram.com.
