News from one of our members! Congratulations, Jerry!

Jerry Casey, a central Ohio composer, has just released a new CD entitled, “Yet, I Will Rejoice,” featuring her choral and vocal chamber music. Five tracks are by the Otterbein University Concert Choir under the direction of Gayle Walker (including one with the Otterbein University Chamber Orchestra). The other tracks include some of central Ohio’s finest musicians. The CD will be available both as a CD and a digital download.

The following are non-OhioMTA announcements for the benefit of our members:

Dr. Laura Melton, from Bowling Green State University, will present a piano master class at 10:00 am on Monday, January 24, 2011 at Mees Hall, Capital University. On the same day at 8:00 pm, she will perform a solo recital on music of Haydn, Liszt, Ravel, Debussy, and Kapustin at Capital’s Huntington Recital Hall. Admissions for these events are free.

Laura Melton, Associate Professor and Coordinator of Keyboard Studies at Bowling Green State University, has been a prize winner in several major international competitions including the Mendelssohn Competition in Berlin, the New York Recital Division of the Joanna Hodges Competition, and the National Symphony Orchestra’s Young Artist Competition. Her orchestral appearances include the Freiburg Musikhochschulorchester in Germany, the San Francisco Chamber Players, the International Chamber Orchestra in California, and the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. She has been featured on Südwestfunk Radio (Germany), Kol Israel, Radio Nacional de España and National Public Radio’s Performance Today in celebration of the birthday of composers, John Corigliano and Samuel Adler. Melton received rave reviews for her CD of solo piano and chamber works of Samuel Adler, released on Naxos in December 2008. A second CD for Naxos included the solo piano works of Sebastian Currier released digitally in October 2010. As a result of winning a Ditson Fund grant for recording in 2010, she recorded the violin and piano works of Currier for Albany Records with violinist, Yehonatan Berick.

Melton is an avid chamber musician and performs across the US as a member of the Phoenix Piano Quartet. She has appeared in several US summer festivals including Ravinia, Aspen, and Sarasota, as well as European festivals in Holland, Switzerland, Germany and Greece. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland, where she was a student of Nelita True; a master’s degree from the University of Southern California, under John Perry; and a doctorate from Rice University, where she was a graduate fellow and teaching assistant to John Perry. As a student of Robert Levin, she spent three years in Germany as a Fulbright Scholar, earning the Solistendiplom while studying at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg. Her students have won numerous competitions and awards, and have been accepted into such prestigious programs as the Curtis Institute, Juilliard, Eastman, Oberlin, Peabody and the New England Conservatory. A graduate of the Interlochen Arts Academy and student of Michael Coonrod, Melton is currently a summer faculty member at the Interlochen Arts Camp. Prior to her BGSU appointment in 1999, Melton was on the faculty of the Idyllwild Arts Academy in California.

Laura Flowers Benson, NCTM, was honored with the 2010 Nationally Certified Teacher of the Year Award for the Central East District. She received a plaque at the Spring Conference for her dedication to music and her service to OMTA. Congratulations, Laura!

Two Announcements

Starter piano open house, Sunday June 7th 2-3 p.m at 784 Kevin Drive [near Oakland Park Nursery and Rt 71], the home of Bill Davis of Davis Piano Movers. Refreshments served.

Often people purchasing a new piano ask this local piano mover to throw away their old one. He loves pianos and can’t bring himself to take them to a landfill, but his home is now FILLED with them! Two OMTA teachers evaluated each instrument, playing each note and testing each pedal. Unless noted, all work. Unattractive keys can be replaced with new plastic covers.

He is selling these pianos as is. They are starter pianos, not warrantied. But those of you playing on digital pianos would find it so much easier to play legato, to balance melody and accompaniment, or to contrast articulation and dynamics on these sturdy older acoustic pianos. Your technique should improve when you play with the stiffer action of an acoustic, as well. Mr. Davis will sell AND TRANSPORT these pianos for these low prices, making them virtually free. Otherwise he plans to convert them to desks, aquariums or other creative purposes as many of them have beautiful cabinets. But he would prefer students to enjoy them. (He will move the pianos at this price to any first floor location involving just a few steps and no right angle turns, inside or close to 270. Tricky moves will cost a little bit more, say $25, as he can determine from discussing your home floorplan and location with you.)

First are two small consoles, lighter weight and newer, for $300 each:

1. Kincaid console. Broken (jury-rigged) music rack, but keys and all pedals in good shape. The front legs were damaged but repaired. Includes a bench.

2. Cable console. Keys are in bad shape in the bass but most sound nice. Includes a bench.

Next are 6 larger and older studio pianos for $200 each

3. Yellow studio 4’5″ with yellow bench. Good condition. The more important sustain and una corda pedals work, but the sostenuto pedal is broken.

4. Attractive Bennett studio with ribbons carved in dark wood. Missing 2 ivory keys. No bench. Two keys don’t work ( F5 # and I think F4 #). Missing soft pedal (una corda). Sustain (damper) pedal works. Sostenuto pedal head is present but not functioning.

5. Unadorned studio piano with flat cabinet and no bench. The sostenuto pedal does not work, but the damper and soft pedals have some function.

6. White studio upright with carvings, bench, and a plug, perhaps for a humidifier. The sostenuto pedal doesn’t work. The sustain and soft pedal work but squeak.

7. Studio piano with lovely light wood carving on beautiful case. The keys are in nasty shape but you could add new key covers.

8. Schaff Bros. studio. The key covers are in bad shape: some ivories are missing. A cluster of keys near middle C sound muffled. Burle wood, inlaid cabinetry. The pedals need work.

The Worthington Winter Indoor Farmers Market has openings for student
performances in November and December. They are especially interested in
holiday repertory but any light, fun music is welcome (jazz, rags, blues, even
cheerful classical e.g. Clementi).

The market will be held again this year at the Griswold Center. Players are
again welcome and encouraged to put out a tip jar. The schedule for the
market for 2008-2009 is:

Sunday, November 30 from 1-5 PM

Saturday, December 13th 10 AM – 1 PM

EVERY Saturday, January 3rd through April 25th from 10 AM to 1 PM

The Columbus Academy is in need of an accompanist for two upcoming musicals. Rehearsals are after school beginning at 3:30. The first, The Secret Garden is scheduled for the last weekend in January. We need an accompanist everyday after school beginning Monday, January 5. There is also a Sunday dress rehearsal and a Thursday afternoon matinee the week of
the show. The second show is Fiddler on the Roof and is scheduled for the first weekend in May. Again, rehearsals are after school. We will do a Thursday evening show of Fiddler, rather than an afternoon matinee. Fees are negotiable, based upon how much time is given, but we can pay the going rate. If you are interested please contact me.
