Nominations for our district’s Independent Certified Teacher of the Year and Collegiate Certified Teacher of the Year will be accepted until Monday, February 15, 2010. This state-wide program has a two-fold goal: To recognize excellence in music teaching and to measure dedication to OhioMTA/MTNA. Any Central East District member may nominate any peer who has been nationally certified for at least five years. The nominee must also be or have been actively involved in OhioMTA/MTNA at the local, state, or national level and must be known for distinguished service and devotion to the cause of music. Anyone who has received this award in the past cannot be nominated again (see p.11 of the activities guide for past nominees).

Please take advantage of this opportunity to nominate a teacher who you believe deserves this recognition. Send a letter with supporting information about the teacher being nominated to Annette Suhovecky, 7642 Glanmore Court, Dublin, OH, 43017 or submit by e-mail to annette@brierhill.net. Piano Workshop I

David Breitman is the professor in charge of early music at Oberlin College. He will bring one of his own Fortepianos down for all to hear and examine. He will play on it, teach on it, and give an historical perspective on the differences with the modern piano, and also what modern players can learn from a familiarity with early instruments. He is a marvelous musician and a first rate performer and teacher.

This will be a very interesting Piano Workshop. We’ll see you all on Friday!

Two Announcements

Starter piano open house, Sunday June 7th 2-3 p.m at 784 Kevin Drive [near Oakland Park Nursery and Rt 71], the home of Bill Davis of Davis Piano Movers. Refreshments served.

Often people purchasing a new piano ask this local piano mover to throw away their old one. He loves pianos and can’t bring himself to take them to a landfill, but his home is now FILLED with them! Two OMTA teachers evaluated each instrument, playing each note and testing each pedal. Unless noted, all work. Unattractive keys can be replaced with new plastic covers.

He is selling these pianos as is. They are starter pianos, not warrantied. But those of you playing on digital pianos would find it so much easier to play legato, to balance melody and accompaniment, or to contrast articulation and dynamics on these sturdy older acoustic pianos. Your technique should improve when you play with the stiffer action of an acoustic, as well. Mr. Davis will sell AND TRANSPORT these pianos for these low prices, making them virtually free. Otherwise he plans to convert them to desks, aquariums or other creative purposes as many of them have beautiful cabinets. But he would prefer students to enjoy them. (He will move the pianos at this price to any first floor location involving just a few steps and no right angle turns, inside or close to 270. Tricky moves will cost a little bit more, say $25, as he can determine from discussing your home floorplan and location with you.)

First are two small consoles, lighter weight and newer, for $300 each:

1. Kincaid console. Broken (jury-rigged) music rack, but keys and all pedals in good shape. The front legs were damaged but repaired. Includes a bench.

2. Cable console. Keys are in bad shape in the bass but most sound nice. Includes a bench.

Next are 6 larger and older studio pianos for $200 each

3. Yellow studio 4′5″ with yellow bench. Good condition. The more important sustain and una corda pedals work, but the sostenuto pedal is broken.

4. Attractive Bennett studio with ribbons carved in dark wood. Missing 2 ivory keys. No bench. Two keys don’t work ( F5 # and I think F4 #). Missing soft pedal (una corda). Sustain (damper) pedal works. Sostenuto pedal head is present but not functioning.

5. Unadorned studio piano with flat cabinet and no bench. The sostenuto pedal does not work, but the damper and soft pedals have some function.

6. White studio upright with carvings, bench, and a plug, perhaps for a humidifier. The sostenuto pedal doesn’t work. The sustain and soft pedal work but squeak.

7. Studio piano with lovely light wood carving on beautiful case. The keys are in nasty shape but you could add new key covers.

8. Schaff Bros. studio. The key covers are in bad shape: some ivories are missing. A cluster of keys near middle C sound muffled. Burle wood, inlaid cabinetry. The pedals need work.

Spring Fling Carnival:
OFMT (Otterbein Future Music Teachers, MTNA collegiate chapter) is in need of volunteers for a fundraiser we are doing called Spring Fling Carnival. It’s on Saturday, May 2nd from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Campus Center at Otterbein. All the proceeds go to Independence High School and Otterbein’s Concert Choir Tour. It’s our first year doing such a big event. We are looking for around 8 volunteers. Even if they could just volunteer a couple of hours during the event that we be great. There will be traditional carnival games, raffles, food, and music.

The 29th season of the Early Music in Columbus concert series concludes with The Early Interval in “If All the World Were Paper: Entertainments at the English Court” on Friday, April 24, 2009 at First Congregational Church, 444 E. Broad Street in downtown Columbus. The concert begins at 8:00 p.m. with a pre-concert lecture at 7:30 p.m.

In its spring program The Early Interval will explore the varied music performed at the English court in the 15th, 16th and early 17th centuries-the latter portion of which is often referred to as the Golden Age of England in music. Included on the concert will be music for Henry V, music from the court of Henry VIII, courtly and country dances, Scottish harp music, music for viol, recorder and crumhorn consorts, sacred and secular songs, and some of the music performed for Jacobean masques. Among the composers represented on the program will be William Byrd, John Dowland, Orlando Gibbons, John Mundy and Tobias Hume.

The members of The Early Interval are Ron Cook, director, Jim Bates, Janice Cook, William Dunlap, Aaron Minnick, Monica Rudy and Tamara Seckel.

The Early Music in Columbus concert series features artists who perform music from the medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods on reproductions of historical instruments. Tickets are $25 general admission, $20 for seniors and $10.00 for students and may be purchased at the door or charged by phone. Coming up right away is our District Spring Conference on Monday! Here’s more information about the program below. Don’t forget that there is a short annual membership meeting, too. This is the only time our entire membership is invited to convene and vote on important issues!

Do you have difficulty finding a balance between preparing your students for competitions and festivals and simply having time to learn foundational repertoire and technique? Come to the Spring Conference – Monday, April 6^th, Graves Piano and Organ Company, 9:30 a.m. – to hear Benita Tse Leung! Benita has a home studio as well as a studio at Wright State University where she and her husband, Jackson, teach and have many award winning students. Benita will share with us her secrets to finding that important balance between competition preparation and plain, old lesson time. Don’t miss it!
