more information about this concert:

Allan Roth is a Suzuki piano teacher living in Bexley and a member and former officer of CEOMTA. Allan also sings bass in The Sherwoods of Cornell, a men’s a cappella singing group from Cornell University comprised of Cornell alumni from the classes of 1958 to 1974. This group, containing many of the original founding members, will continue over 50 years of delighting audiences when they present An Evening of Song-The best in traditional and contemporary college a cappella in Columbus at and for the benefit of the Jewish Community Center on Saturday, April 16, 2011, in the Roth-Resler Auditorium at 7:30 PM. Appearing with the Sherwoods will be Philomel, the vocal chamber ensemble from the Capital University Conservatory of Music. Philomel, which translated means Nightingale, lives up to its namesake. They sing a little bit of everything, specializing in the broad range of repertoire that distinguishes vocal music at Capital. Their performances include music from the Renaissance period to contemporary jazz and popular music styles.

The Sherwood repertoire includes beautiful ballads, rousing spirituals, original close-harmony arrangements, show tunes, pop covers, and spirited Cornell songs well seasoned with humor. The Sherwoods were founded at Cornell in 1956 as a triple quartet. They performed extensively on campus and in the east, and traveled the world to perform on USO and numerous other tours. Starting in 1983, alumni from that group, which disbanded in 1974, have been performing at the annual Cornell reunions and also in the Bahamas and all over the country, from Palm Springs, San Luis Obispo and Cambria, California to Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Vero Beach, Florida; Columbus, Ohio; and Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, to name just a few of the group’s performance venues. The best selections from their seven LP records have been remastered and collected on two CDs.

Tickets are $10 ($5 for students, seniors over 60, and JCC members) at the door or by calling The Jewish Center at 614-559-6276 or 614-231-2731. The Jewish Center address is 1125 College Avenue, Columbus, OH 43209.

Dear Colleagues,
I am happy to announce WMU’s first Chopin Competition for High school Students on November 7, 2010. The competition will be open to students between the ages of 15-17 who live in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and Illinois. The day of the competition will also feature masterclasses and lectures on Chopin and a culminating winner’s concert in the evening.

Please refer to the following website for information and an application form:
www.wmuchopincompetition.com

Currently Chair of the CEOMTA Piano Workshop, Dr. Gulimina Mahamuti is invited to lecture and perform on September 11 and 12, 2010, at Northwest University for Nationalities in China as part of the university’s Sixtieth Anniversary Celebration. For its 2010-2011 Concert Series, she will perform as a guest pianist on September 26, 2010, with the Southeast Kansas Symphony Orchestra. She is also invited to perform for the 2010-2011 Arts & Lectures Series at the Mansfield campus of The Ohio State University on April 24, 2011.

The Columbus Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, a national not-for-profit educational organization, is hosting a recital by internationally-known organist/keyboard artist Hector Olivera. It will be on Sunday, September 12, 2010, Mees Hall, Capital University at 4:00 p.m.

Mr. Olivera will play the Mees Hall Schantz pipe organ as well as the Roland Atelier. This will not be a traditional organ recital. Hector has a reputation of truly entertaining his audiences with his wit and dazzling displays of keyboard virtuosity. He often accompanies himself, simultaneously being the soloist and the orchestra. The Roland technology by itself is great enough to attract audio enthusiasts.

Tickets are available through www.ticketmaster.com : Adults $20 / Seniors (65 and older) $15 / Students $10. You may also send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Sara Seidel, 204 Park Blvd., Worthington, OH 43085. State the number of each type of ticket you want and include a check for the total amount made payable to: Columbus Chapter-AGO.

Tickets will also be available at the door on September 12 before the program. Ticket sales at the door will be by cash or check only. Current members of the Columbus Chapter of the American Guild of Organists will be admitted free with a picture ID.

A Saturday workshop will be held in Mees Hall from 10 a.m. until noon (for the football enthusiasts). During the workshop Hector will concentrate on artistic registration from the simple to the more complex. He will also share his approach to the art of transcribing keyboard and orchestral music for use on the organ. There is no admission charge for the workshop. All are welcome.

One of our Central East District members, Michael Davis, passed away on Sunday, March 2. The article below from the Dispatch tells of his musical career and accomplishments.

Publication:The Columbus Dispatch; Date:Mar 4, 2008; Section:Life & Arts; Page:36

MICHAEL DAVIS 1937-2008
Violinist stood out as performer, teacher
By Gary Budzak THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Violinist Michael Davis, concertmaster of the Lancaster Festival Orchestra for all of its 20 seasons, died Sunday at Riverside Methodist Hospital. He was 70.

The cause of death was amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease), said his partner, Nelson Harper.

Davis, who was born in Hull, England, was also a professor emeritus of violin in the Ohio State University School of Music, where he taught for many years.

“We were expecting to attend a performance of his in another couple of months, so that’s heartbreaking,” said Mellasenah Morris, director of the school. “Everyone loved him. He was such a fine gentleman and a wonderful artist, great teacher, great colleague.”

Davis was a former concertmaster of the Columbus Symphony, ProMusica Chamber Orchestra of Columbus, Columbus Bach Ensemble and Scottish National Orchestra.

A student of noted violinists Yehudi Menuhin and Max Rostal, Davis recorded 12 albums and performed frequently in central Ohio.

    He lived in Upper Arlington.

Other colleagues offered e-mail tributes to Davis.

“Our community has lost a deeply caring artist,” wrote Ruth Triplett Haddock, executive director of the Jefferson Academy of Music at OSU. “Michael Davis has been a personal friend for more than 40 years and a friend to the musical arts and music students throughout a life cut too short by a tragic illness.”

“Michael’s extraordinary musical gifts proved to mean something greater than just performing,” wrote Gary Sheldon, conductor of the Lancaster Festival Orchestra. “He showed that music can teach something about humanity, about connecting people with their families and with their communities. . . . He was ultimately an educator who gave something from his heart to every student, every orchestra and every audience.”

“Michael Davis added greatly to the spirit of the Lancaster Festival,” wrote Lou Ross, executive director. “Michael was a joy to be with and to listen to. He will be sorely missed.”

A tribute concert is scheduled for May 5 at OSU. No funeral is planned.

Condolences can be sent to www.schoedinger.com.
