A Message To All Columbus Symphony Orchestra Musician Supporters
The Musicians of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra want to thank all of you who gave us your email addresses last summer as a means of future communications. By now most of you probably know through local media that we agreed to accept massive wage and benefit cuts in a new three year contract with the CSO board of trustees.
Last January the CSO board announced its intention to fire 22 full-time musicians and exact a 30% compensation cut from the 31 who would remain beginning this season. After fighting against them for as long and as hard as we could, in the new contract no Musician will be fired but we agreed to accept compensation cuts on an annual basis of about 25%.
Why did we decide to make such an agreement at this time? One concern was the prospect of the cancellation of the remainder of this season, and perhaps even the next. This could have had a devastating effect on the orchestra we are trying to save. Also, after living without salary and benefits since last June, a small but significant number of musicians were facing potential ruin due to their inability to obtain health insurance for themselves and their families due to serious pre-existing conditions. Others were facing dire financial circumstances. Because we care about each other and have always acted as a solid group, even those of us who did not want to accept these painful cuts voted for the new agreement to help those who were in serious trouble.
When the CSO returns to regular operation this December, it will have been shut down for 6 months. Now that an agreement has been reached with the board, we want to build peace with them and work together to strengthen the CSO in this ever worsening economy. Now that we have made this enormous financial sacrifice, we hope that you and many others will step up and support us as much as you can. We urge you to support the CSO by purchasing concert subscriptions for this season as soon as they are available and by sending donations directly to the CSO now. It will be very difficult to resume operations in time to begin the season and any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for supporting us this year throughout this long crisis. We hope you will remain interested in supporting the Columbus Symphony Orchestra for many years to come.
On behalf of the Musicians,
Douglas Fisher, President

CHAMBER MUSIC CONNECTION, ADULT PROGRAM
FALL 2008 SESSION, Friday, November 7, Friday, November 14, Thursday, November 20, and Friday, November 21 (concert) (7:00-9:00 p.m.) – (Fee – $150)
If you have adult students or know of adult musicians who are interested in playing chamber music, please encourage them to register for our fall 2008 session.
Meeting at St John’s Episcopal Church in Worthington, OH, CMC’s adult programs focus on the joy of playing music and meeting other adults with a similar passion for reading and playing music together. Because chamber music playing means playing in a small group, each player has their own part and ensemble sizes vary from three to six players. Chamber Music is accessible at even the earliest abilities and the repertoire is vast allowing younger ability players to join in on the fun while advanced players can meet excellent challenges both technically and musically.
For more information and to sign up, please visit the Chamber Music Connection website, www.cmconnection.org for an application form, or feel free to contact us by email.
Sincerely,
Leslie Maaser (Adult program Coordinator) email: Bmaaser@aol.com,
Deborah Price ( Founder/Artistic Director) email: price242@aol.com
