Independent Music Teachers Forum

The purpose of the Independent Music Teachers Forum (IMTF) is to provide a platform for discussions of problems and challenges facing the music teacher who operates a private studio.  These Forums are provided for teachers to share ideas.  If you can bring materials and ideas to the discussion, everyone benefits!  If you just want to come and listen, you are always welcome.

                Date:        Friday, October 9, 2009

              Time:        10:00 a.m.

         Location:        Singleton Piano Studio

                                3244 N. High St., Columbus, OH   43202

(Located South of North Broadway near Como Ave.)

Program:        “The Tools of the Trade”

Musicians use scales, arpeggios and chords as part of the basic vocabulary of technique and theory.  At this forum we will discuss:

  1. Why teach these skills?
  2. How do you present these skills for better retention?  Do you have ways of structuring the presentation?
  3. Aspects of good technique
  4. How do you help students to apply these tools for better performance and understanding of the literature being played?

Lynn Singleton’s studio has multiple keyboards so participants can have “hands on experience.”  Although the technical issues will apply to pianists, teachers of any instrument may discover some ideas that inspire their teaching.  There will be some planned presentations from experienced teachers.  However, please bring ideas and strategies that have worked in your studio. We can all learn from each other!

Program:        Book Discussion:This is Your Brain on Music” by Daniel J. Levitin

The last few years have given us some great books on music!  Buy this book early and start to discover.  This forum will be of interest to teachers of any instrument.  The book is guaranteed to give you insights into how we learn music and why we enjoy it.  It is available in paperback and was a New York Times “Best Seller”.

The Forum will also include some short reviews of other current books on or about music.  If you have read a good “music book”, tell us about it!  This Forum should be of interest to any musician!  Even if you don’t read the book, come and learn!
