WORKSHOP I

Time-Travel for Pianists:  “How Today’s Players Can Learn from Yesterday’s Instruments”

Dr. David Breitman is Professor of Fortepiano at the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, where he also directs the Historical Performance program.  A native of Montreal, he earned his Doctorate under Malcolm Bilson at Cornell University.  His growing discography attests to his versatility as he assists singers and other artists on the fortepiano, harpsichord, clavichord and modern piano.  He was one of seven fortepianists who together presented complete cycles of the Beethoven sonatas in New York, Florence and Palermo.  This led to an extraordinarily well-received 10-CD SET produced by CLAVES. Dr. Breitman is in demand world-wide as a soloist, chamber musician, and assisting artist on the fortepiano and other early instruments.

                               Date:    Friday, November 13, 2009

                              Time:    10:00 AM – 12:00 Noon

Location:    Graves Piano & Organ Company

Event:    Professor Breitman will discuss early keyboard instruments and the performance practice surrounding their contemporary use.  As much of this music is the staple of our modern diet, there is a treasure trove of information that can be deduced from a study of the instruments themselves.  Professor Breitman will bring one of his own fortepianos to the session.  He will demonstrate the instrument by his own playing, by lecturing, and by coaching two students in Mozart and Beethoven movements.

Fees:    No fee for OhioMTA members or Non-members.
