February IMTF – Independent Music Teacher Forum

Program: Lyrical Gems of the 20^th and 21^st Century for Beginning and Intermediate Piano Students

Presenter: Lynn Singleton, NCTM

Throughout her teaching career, Lynn has been a leader in the search for quality piano literature written by well-recognized 20^th and 21^st century composers. She has presented several workshops on the subject. At this forum,Lynn will play and share music that you can use in working with piano students of beginner and intermediate levels. We will spend some time discussing techniques for teaching and learning this literature. You don’t want to miss the chance to learn about some excellent contemporary piano literature!

The Central East District is accepting nominations for Nationally Certified Teacher of the Year. The district may select both an Independent and Collegiate teacher. Nominations may be made by any member in the form of a letter to the District Certification Chairman. Nominations are due by February 15, and may be sent by U.S. mail or as a document via email. The district Teacher(s) of the Year is then nominated to receive OhioMTA Teacher of the Year honors!

Our district is privileged to include many certified teachers who give hours and years of service to our members, our students, and to the central Ohio music community. Please take this opportunity to honor a deserving colleague for Independent Certified Teacher or Collegiate Certified Teacher of the Year. The 32nd season of the Early Music in Columbus concert series continues with the Norman/Greenberg Duo in Let Me In This Ae Night on Friday, Feb. 3, 2012, 8 pm in Mees Hall at Capital University. A pre-concert lecture will be presented at 7:30 pm.

Two of the most imaginative and dynamic performers in traditional and early music join forces to present a program that runs the gamut from Renaissance, Baroque, traditional and original music incorporating flutes, violins, vielles, pipes, keyboards, and voice. The program presents music from the CD Let Me In This Ae Night, Scottish and Baroque music being the main root elements with the music of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia featured prominently in the program.

Chris Norman is known for both his solo and ensemble work with The Baltimore Consort, Helicon, Skyedance and Concerto Caledonia. His solo CD releases have received unanimous praise from critics and audiences alike. His debut Man With the Wooden Flute made the Billboard crossover charts for 12 weeks. Since that time Norman has collaborated, toured and recorded with some of today’s most seminal artists in the genres of early music and traditional folk music. David Greenberg has gained the reputation in Cape Breton music circles as being one of the few people from outside the Nova Scotia island to have achieved a fluent command of the Cape Breton idiom. These two extraordinary performers have played together as sparring partners for more than a decade on the concert stage and recording studio.

The Early Music in Columbus concert series features regional, national and international artists who perform music from the medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods on reproductions of historical instruments. Tickets are $27 general admission, $22 for seniors and $12.00 for students and may be purchased through the web site: www.earlymusicincolumbus.org, at the door or charged by phone. Summer Sonata at CIM

The Cleveland Institute of Music will host the fifth edition of Summer Sonata from June 11th – June 22nd, 2012. Directed by Dr. Sean Schulze, this two-week program will cater to junior pianists aged 10-12 as well as senior pianists aged 13-18. Drawing on CIM’s distinguished faculty as well as renowned guest artists, this program will include regular private lessons, piano-duet coaching, theory, ear-training, public masterclasses, piano literature classes and much more. Guest artists this year will include, Dr. Caroline Oltmanns, Joela Jones, Jerry Wong and the Westhuizen Duo.Out-of town students are encouraged to apply and can be accommodated in CIM’s dormitory provided they are accompanied by a parent or legal adult guardian. Here’s other exciting news about one of our members!

Mansfield pianist Dr. Gulimina Mahamuti, currently an Assistant Professor of Music at Ohio Wesleyan University and CEOMTA piano workshop chair, will perform piano solo and violin-piano duo with violinist Dr. Selim Giray from Pittsburg State University at Carnegie Hall on Sunday, January 8, 2012 at 7:30 pm. In addition to playing Shi Fu’s Xinjiang Suite No. 2, she will premiere Chen Yi’s Variations on “Awariguli,” a solo piano composition recently published by Theodore Presser Company. A native of Karamay City in Xinjiang, China, Gulimina enjoys an active career as a soloist, collaborative pianist, piano teacher, and lecturer in both China and the United States. She performs extensively in major cities in the US, Canada, and China, with broadcasts on radio and State TV. CEOhioMTA Piano Workshop I

Pianist Dr. Reena Berger Natenberg will give the first piano workshop, on Musical and Extra-Musical Inspirations in the Compositions of Sergei Rachmaninoff, on Friday, November 11 at 10 am at the Graves Piano & Organ. Dr. Natenberg has performed as a soloist and chamber musician throughout North America, South America, Asia, and in Europe. Since moving to the U.S. in 2000, she has performed as a guest artist at many university music schools in this country. A noted pedagogue, Dr. Natenberg has presented master classes, lectures, and conducted workshops throughout the world. Currently she is coordinator of the piano area and Associate Professor of Piano at Pittsburg State University in Kansas. Students of Dr. Natenberg have won numerous awards and competitions. Many are frequent performers who are on the piano faculties of reputed universities and conservatories in the U.S. and abroad. Independent Music Teachers Forum

Friday is the first IMTF!

It’s not too late for “Technology Treasures”

You won’t want to miss the October 7th Independent Teacher Forum at 10 a.m at the Old Worthington Library. Our topic is “Technology Treasures” and Liz Atkinson has prepared a great presentation which includes many of the on-line websites she uses in her teaching. She will demonstrate them with a screen and projector and has a fabulous hand out for you.

This year is the first time that IMTF has asked for an RSVP for the meeting and although I have heard from many people, I know that some of you who have planned to attend have missed the RSVP. Don’t let that stop you from coming! We had hoped to have the RSVPs to help us in planning but you are still welcome.
