I’m pleased to announce that I have three new books available titled “That’s Jazz Performance”. These are supplements to my jazz piano method of the same name which balances written music and improvisation.

Check them out here:

That's Jazz Performance book

I’m not sure if Graves or Stanton’s has them in stock yet.
Here’s the official blurb from the Neil A. Kjos Music Company:

Each tune in these books correlates to a preparatory tune in the companion That’s Jazz method books. Whether learning through individual study or with a teacher, it is strongly recommended that serious jazz students master each preparatory tune before studying the correlating tune in these books. Each tune includes enhanced repeats, optional duet parts, chord symbols, and more.
Demonstration tracks (available for download at www.kjos.com)
and suggestions for MIDI keyboard enhancements make practicing great fun! Going Further pages continue to build improvisation skills and encourage creative exploration.

Cheers!

A message from the Carpe Diem String Quartet:
Dear Chamber Music Fan,

Welcome to our exciting new concert series! In partnership with WOSU Public Media and Columbus Dance Theatre (CDT), and through the generous support of our Founders Circle, Carpe Diem String Quartet presents two new concert series. Our chamber series, Seize the Music, will take place on six Saturday evenings at CDT, and will be repeated on Sunday afternoons at COSI. For those of you who love the classics, we have a dynamic season of music by many well-loved classical composers including Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, Schubert, and Mozart. In addition, we will introduce you to undiscovered and recently written gems of the repertoire that are sure to become your new favorites!

We are thrilled to begin our concert series with From Silk to Steel, featuring music from the Baroque era to the present, played on period and modern instruments. Season highlights include our November concert, an evening of enchanting autumnal music, which includes Schubert’s famous “Death and the Maiden” string quartet and features guest soprano Audrey Luna. Ms. Luna will join us for a selection of Songs by Brahms, Schumann, Ginastera, and Golijov. In February, we welcome accordion virtuoso Peter Soave for a concert of irresistible music from Venezuela and Argentina including: Five Paleontological Mysteries by Aldemaro Romero, and Libertango by Astor Piazzolla. Also of interest this year: Gypsy Fire, with music by Brahms, Kodaly, and Dohnanyi; the premiere of Korine Fujiwara’s Fiddle Quartet; and our ongoing exploration and recording of the great Russian composer Sergey Taneyev.

Our family series, carpe_diem@cosi, is accessible, educational, and interactive. Join us for fun-filled concerts, which include a look at technology and instruments, a Halloween-themed spooktacular that examines how music affects our moods, an unforgettable romp through time with the Simpsons, an exploration of the inner workings of accordions, an opportunity to learn how to write music, and much more!

Sincerely,
Korine, Chas, John & Diego

Otterbein College Department of Music to Present Dedicatory Recital Honoring New Piano

On Friday, September 26 at 8:00 p.m., the Otterbein College Department of Music will present a dedicatory recital in honor of the new 7’ Steinway grand piano generously donated to the College by Drs. Morton and Barbara Achter. The concert, which is free and open to the public, will take place in Riley Auditorium in the Battelle Fine Arts Center, located at 170 West Park Street in Westerville.

Dr. Morton Achter was Chairperson of the Otterbein Department of Music from 1975-2000, and Dr. Barbara Achter also had a distinguished career in academia, including serving as Chairperson of the Department of Nursing at Otterbein. On Wednesday, August 13, Otterbein faculty members Drs. Craig Johnson, Richard Lopez, Suzanne Newcomb, and Caroline Salido-Richardson traveled to the Steinway & Sons factory in New York City to select the piano and they are thrilled with the instrument that was chosen. The dedicatory recital for the piano on September 26 will feature the entire piano faculty and friends, including Dr. Morton Achter, who will travel to campus with his spouse from their home in Maine to be the Department’s honored guests. The program will include a variety of works for solo piano and piano duo, including the music of J.S. Bach, Felix Mendelssohn, Vittorio Monti, Maurice Ravel, and an original work by Dr. Achter.

This program will be free and open to the public. For more information, call 614-823-1508.
