SCHOLARSHIPS – SUMMER MUSIC STUDY

Summer Music Study Scholarships may be used to pay for a music camp, master class, workshop, institute, or special lessons or coaching separate from, and in addition to, study with the teacher of current enrollment.  The scholarships (listed below) will be granted according to their specific purposes.

Basis of Awards:

The student will be judged on the quality of his/her performance (50%), sight reading ability (20%), and completed essay questions (30%).

 Eligibility:

Applicants must have studied in the performance medium of the audition with their current teacher for at least 6 of the 9 months immediately preceding the auditions.  2009 winners are ineligible to apply in the year 2010, with the exception of those applying for the Graduating Senior Award for rising music majors.  The auditions are open to students of OhioMTA members and non-members.  However, students of non-member teachers are required to reside within the Central East District.

Divisions and Requirements:

Elementary (ages 9 to 11) – 3 to 6 minutes

Junior High (ages 12 to 14) – 6 to 10 minutes

Senior High (ages 15 +) – 10 to 20 minutes

There are no collegiate level scholarships.

NOTE:  Actual audition length permitted will depend on the total number of applicants.

 Repertoire Requirements:

Two or three selections from different compositional eras should be prepared.  Pianists and vocalists must perform from memory.  Memorization is optional for all other instrumentalists.  Prepared selections will be followed by sight reading.

                         Fee:        $10 for students of members, $40 for students of non-members

 Scholarship Rules and Regulations:

1.     These awards are open to students of OhioMTA members and non-members.

2.     Previous recipients of OhioMTA Summer Scholarships are not eligible to audition the year following their award, with the exception of future music majors auditioning for the Graduating Senior Award.

3.     All students will audition in person the day of the auditions.  No recordings or deferred auditions are possible.

4.     Winners will be notified by mail within seven days of the competition.

5.     Participants will receive comment sheets from the judges via mail.

6.     Award money must be used during the summer of the year in which it is awarded and cannot be deferred to the fall (with the exception of the Graduating Senior Award) or to another year.

7.     Payment of the awards will be made directly to the institution sponsoring the camp, workshop, etc.  Winners must contact the scholarship chairman in writing by June 30 (via mail or email) regarding direction of funds.

8.     Accompaniment for non-piano auditions is recommended, but not required.  If an accompanist is used, he or she may not be the student’s teacher or a family member.

9.     Auditions are closed.  To assure anonymity, teachers may not assist students in any manner, nor identify themselves to the judges.  Instrumentalists are expected to tune their own instruments.

10.   A teacher may enter no more than three students.

11.   A student may compete on more than one instrument, but cannot win more than one scholarship.

12.   No late applications will be accepted.    

 

Videotaping, photography, and any electronic recording are forbidden at all OhioMTA recitals and performance events.

On a separate sheet of paper, please write the following: 

 

  1. List musical activities in which you have been involved (e.g. school, church, and community participation, concert attendance, teaching, composing).
  2. List goals you have accomplished and awards or recognitions you have received.  Discuss your current  musical goals and aspirations.
  3. Name your current favorite piece and explain why you enjoy playing it.
  4. Describe how you would use your scholarship (specifically) and how you feel it would benefit your development as a musician.

 

Include this sheet with your application.  A panel of judges will score your responses prior to your audition.  This will constitute 30% of your overall score.

 The chairman must approve your summer music study program before funds will be disbursed.  Award money must be used the summer of the year in which it is awarded and cannot be deferred to the fall or to another year.  The exception to this is the Graduating Senior Award, which is for rising music majors only.

 Honors Recital:

Scholarship recipients are invited to perform at the OhioMTA HONORS RECITAL on Sunday, May 2, 2010 at Graves Piano & Organ Company.  Teachers need to contact the chair of the Recitals program, Dr. Caroline B.
