Out and About

The two Out and About programs share several goals:

  • to encourage students to share their talent to benefit others,
  • to provide public recognition for talented young musicians, and
  • to support the arts and greater good of our community.

Important note about the Sound of Mind and Body Program:

October 2009

Nine students of three teachers  (Amy Rebecca Laurence, Mary Craig Powell and Melissa Robol)   played at Riverside Hospital in this month’s “Sound of Mind and Body” (SMB) program.

However, due to the onset of the H1N1 virus this musical outreach will be postponed until vaccines are readily available for all potential participants.  We will announce when programs resume well in advance. This will hopefully be December, in time for students to share seasonal music.

Please send no more than one parent with each participant as SMB is a public service rather than a recital, and seating should be reserved for patients, their loved ones, and hospital staff.  Specifically, siblings should not attend.

Sound of Mind and Body” at Riverside Hospital

Students of piano, voice, strings and woodwinds play in the hospital lobby, the Cancer Care Center, and the Acute Rehab ward dining area.  This is not a recital, but a public service, so we respectfully ask that students do not invite more than one parent, leaving seating free for hospital patients, staff and visitors.

Dates & Times:       1:30-2:30 p.m., the first Sunday of each month, October – May.

This event will take place on April 4 (Easter Sunday).

Registration Fee:    Free to OhioMTA members; $5 for non-members.  The hospital  provides complimentary parking tickets.

Registration Deadline:   The twentieth of each preceding month.

Repertoire Requirements:  Students perform up to 5 minutes in length at three locations.  Please be sensitive to the hospital setting; neither dynamics nor intensity should disturb those nearby.  The student must have their piece at performance level with correct notes, phrasing, rhythm and musical expression.  Memorization is encouraged but not required.

Registration Instructions:  Teachers may register one student or duet pair per month by email or direct mail.  Additional students may be scheduled if registration is light.  Please include: OhioMTA teacher’s name, student’s name and age, level (elementary, intermediate or advanced), piece, composer and length.  Registrations MUST come from the teacher. They will be accepted at the discretion of the chairman, generally on a first-come first-served basis.   Please click below for the registration form:

STARS:  (Students and Teachers Supporting the Arts)

STARS encourages our students to be “out and about” not only as performers, but in audiences appreciative of the efforts of others.  Ancillary goals are to support many fine musical organizations, and to expose our students to the potentially life changing impact of cathartic music.

In brief, we invite students during the school year (September – May) to attend seven public musical performances that provide programs from either a professional or collegiate performance or any special concert at their temple or place of worship.  Concerts can be free, however, we hope our students will augment the audiences for stellar performances by the Columbus Symphony, the Columbus Jazz Orchestra, and many other fine musical groups among us.

Students give their teacher a complete packet of seven programs plus a postcard listing their personal data.  Teachers send the postcards to the Out and About chairman. They will then be entered into a drawing to take place at our Spring Conference for complimentary tickets from participating sponsor organizations.  All students will receive certificates of participation. A flier explaining the program and postcards can be downloaded below:

Teachers, you may print off the entry form on normal weight paper, fill it out, fold and seal it and attach postage, and mail to the STARS chairman who will then enter it in our prize drawing.  Or you can simply print it out and bring it to our Spring Conference when the drawing will be held.
